Discover Atelier Emmanuel's culture

The month of May has started out pretty busy at Atelier Emmanuel! We are very happy to announce the arrival of 3 new staff members. This month we'll introduce you to Matthew, who joined as a vibrant colorist. Among his repertoire of coloring skills, Matthew hopes to make balayage a client favorite. Find out more about him below, and about our other new staff members next month. Starting next week, Atelier Emmanuel is hosting Beauty Shop Culture, a photo and found object exhibition. The show was created by Candacy Taylor and will be on display for a month. We hope to see you at the Opening Night, Wednesday, May 19th!
We had another photoshoot recently. Elisa Cicinelli, the shoot's photographer, has picked out some faves for you to check out.
Our promotion this month rewards our regular clients for referring new clients to us. As long as they mention your name when they book their first appointment, you will receive credit towards services. Pretty simple!
We are looking forward to seeing you all at Atelier Emmanuel this month.

New Haircolorist Matthew joins Atelier Emmanuel

Matthew G. was born in Europe and began his training in Melbourne, Australia. He returned to Europe to complete a course at the L'Oreal Studios in Paris, and soon found himself training under Alexandre de Paris. Matthew is proficient in all techniques that dominate haircoloring today - from maintaining base, to elegant fashion balayage, to simply acccentuating natural hair color with traditional foil highlights. Matthew has worked for many prestigious salons around California, including Joseph Cozza in San Francisco, Prive salon and John Frieda Salon in Los Angeles. His clients have come from the entertainment industry, the fashion world, and the trendy avant-guarde. Matthew hopes to bring renewed attention to balayage as a coloring technique.

Focus on technique: introducing Balayage

Balayage is a hair coloring technique designed to create very natural-looking highlights which grow out without developing a noticeable and obvious root. It is one of the most natural-looking and modern coloring techniques available right now. It was first popularized in 1970s' Paris. Color is painted on from the base of the hair to the tips in broad strokes ("balayage" in French means "to sweep").
One of the reasons balayage has been popular with celebs like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller is its versatility. As the color is painted on, your colorist can choose exactly which sections to lighten, and vary the shades on the fly. This allows a range of color shifts from the barely noticeable to dramatic gradients.
The very essence of balayage is in its “grown out” look, so it requires less maintenance than traditional highlights. This means less visits to the salon for touch-ups. "Balayage is an ideal coloring technique for any kind of lightening, whether you’re after a blonde boost or want to add some caramel tones to your naturally brown hair", says Matthew, our new colorist. Its popularity is set to increase even further in the near future.
Feel free to book a consultation with Matthew to get more information. This is not a technique that many salons currently offer, so take advantage of his expertise!

Photoshoot

We've just done a photoshoot dedicated to unisex short hair cuts. Sarah and Trevor played our androgynous duo to Elisa's camera. We kept to a simple atmosphere and pared down outfits, letting light and shadow be at the forefront. Make-up and cropped hairstyles created dramatic images.
